Tonight was the perfect night to stay in, delight my taste buds in orange chicken with fried rice and get lost in a “based on actual events” type of movie. Tonight’s feature film… Spotlight…
Most will know of this film, it came into theaters everywhere later last year. The unfolded events are based on the horribly unforgiven actions of many Parishioners, Priests and Cardinals in the Catholic church against hundreds of innocent children. Molestation covered up with thick denial. Voices silenced, files sealed shut to a private unapologetic level and heads turning in the opposite direction.
30 plus years of bought off hushed cases so that men acting under God could continue to remain despicable while hiding behind their Collars. Spotlight at The Boston Globe took the story that had been previously half-assed ran and dug deeper. Victims found and interviewed, court docs legally attained and unsealed, guilty brought out from their dark corners and a light shown for all betrayed silences to begin speaking.
Being a movie buff, I have a soft spot for films such as this one, the true stories revived in a different form. I, however, have a tendency to deeply think… this world has such a high percentage of disgrace that poisons it. Poverty… murder… infidelity… war… rape… abuse… etc. the fact that the church no longer has an 100% safety rating causes eyes to widely open to the depressing fact that absolutely nothing in this life is sacred. Schools filled with bullying minds, Homes built on broken foundations, Relationships torn from unfaithful mouths… the list goes on. So far that it’s reached all the way to the top, God’s House. Are us humans so truly glitched that there’s not one single sanctuary to remain pure?
Now these cases were from the Catholic house, but who’s to say that that’s the only religion to be so extremely tarnished. It’s just disgustingly shocking that we’re that destructive… to the point were innocent lives end up getting the worst of it. Some victims from that horrible tragedy are still alive while some took their lives. Needles, bottles and bullets permanently buried their pain.
I am in no way tarnishing the Catholic religion or any religion… studies state that 6% of Priests are “suspicious”. This means that the remaining 94% are honestly there to preach, teach and help. It’s just heartbreaking when you start running the numbers.
I just thought that church was supposed to be the one place were evil couldn’t penetrate…
